What is a Wage Worker?

A wage worker is paid by the hour at a specific rate, and overall pay in a given week is based on the number of hours worked during that particular week.

Many companies hire wage workers, such as servers in the fast food industry and in restaurants.

You can use this calculator to get a good idea of how much you will make if you are being paid per hour. If your hours are generally fixed per week, the calculation of monthly and annual wages can be fairly accurate. If your hours fluctuate every week, the monthly and annual should be viewed as approximations.

Do Wage Workers Get Overtime?

In the United States, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), originally enacted in 1938, requires companies to pay non-exempt workers overtime at a rate of Time and a Half if more than 40 hours are worked in a given week. However, each U.S. State may have laws that augment or differ from FLSA, so it's always helpful to check your particular State for overtime requirements.

If you are entitled to overtime, use our Overtime Calculator to determine how much overtime you have or will make in a given week where you qualify for overtime pay.

Note: If you live and work in another country and work on an hourly basis, check that country's overtime laws.

Do Wage Workers Get Benefits?

Wage workers may or may not get certain benefits. It is often based on the company for which the person works, as well as State laws.

For example, in some States, wage workers may accrue a certain number of paid sick leave if they have worked a certain number of hours in the year.

When it comes to paid time off (PTO), including vacation, this is generally at the discretion of the company, and there are currently no State laws requiring PTO for hourly wage workers.
